Engaging the Mind to Get to the Heart

Posted: June 21, 2011 in Uncategorized

Why would I spend time reading a blog? Why would a person take time every Sunday to listen to someone preach the bible? Why, for that matter, do we have to think things through carefully? It’s the heart that matters, isn’t it? It is service to God and to others that really counts. And so why go through all the hard work of studying and wrestling through theological issues when God looks at our hearts (1 Samuel 16:7) not the mind. The answer is that we engage our minds to get to the heart. We spend time growing in our understanding of who God is and what He has done for us in and through Christ so that we would love and worship Him with all our hearts. (2 Peter 3:18)

The ultimate goal of theology is not knowledge, but worship. If our learning and knowledge of God do not lead to the joyful praise of God, we have failed. We learn only that we might laud. Another way of putting it is to say that theology without doxology is idolatry. The only theology worth studying is a theology that can be sung. – Sam Storms

And so to be clear, I am passionate about posting, teaching, counseling and preaching¬† deep theological truth that is rooted in scripture because I believe that this is the means through which we grow and mature and truly worship our Saviour. One of the people God has used in my life to help me understand and appreciate this is Dr. John Piper. Now some of you have gotten a taste of his teaching in Sunday school this last semester. For those who have missed it, here’s a short video from one of his more recent books…

As Paul says in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
